This Week's GolfChannel.com Blog...

Hey Everyone. PP checking in here. Back home in Scottsdale for the week and then gearing up to head out for the Canadian Open next Monday.

As you know, I played the Reno-Tahoe Open last week and had my best outing since the PLAYERS back in April. I wound up T-11th and earned enough to secure my Tour card through 2007. It's still frustrating to me that at this point of the year I even had to worry about that. The week after the PLAYERS I was No. 31 on the money list and after missing the middle part of the season, I slipped to 98th. I'm at 96th this week, but had I not played Reno I'd be around No. 104. Either way, it is what it is and I'm just glad to have a little less pressure entering the final few months of the season.

Both elbows were killing me this week, but I powered through it. I was popping Advil all day, every day (... I'm still waiting on some free samples, guys) and that kept the inflammation down. Also, my guy Jeff Banaszak wasn't out there this week, so I was riding solo and had to make sure and stretch myself every morning and evening.

All in all, I was happy with how things went in Reno and I think playing a tough course like the PGA two weeks ago, really helped me this past week. It got me in playing shape and by the time I got to Reno, I was satisfied with all aspects of my game. Everything is solid right now. Yeah, I missed some putts - but I can live with that because I was happy with my stroke. It's one thing to just not have 'it' out there, but that wasn't the case. Everything I was hitting had a good chance of going in. The line, the speed, it was all good and it helped my confidence throughout the week. Thursday's five birdies for a 67 helped a ton, as well. It was my first bogey-free round since rolling 60 at the Bob Hope. That definitely set the tone for the week.

I left Reno on Sunday night and headed to Vegas for an evening to blow off some steam and just hang. I checked out the Wynn this time around. Daly got me set up with one of the hosts there (Stephan Mornet) and they took really good care of me. Sent the Phantom to pick me up, VIP at their club Tryst and first class all the way. I was really impressed with the place. I could've hung there all week, but one night is probably my best bet. Get in, get out, play a few machines and head home without letting the one-armed bandits take me down. I'll be back in October for the LVI and I usually head out the Saturday before the tourney, so this was just a quick Vegas fix.

Plus, it's home improvement week at the Perez household. Headed to Home Depot for a new blower and working on my pool area. We just got a urinal installed out by the pool bathroom for all my buds who forget to lift the seat. We're really stepping things up for the final few weeks of summer.

That's about it on this end. Happy with how things played out in Reno, taking this week off and the back on the road for the Canadian Open and 84 LUMBER. I'll check back in next week.

Oh yeah, thanks to everyone who's been emailing my MySpace.com page. The well wishes are very appreciated. Keep sending in your questions as I'm told we're going to aim for a Q&A for next week's blog - and make sure to add the MySpace page to your friends list as we're going to start giving out some PatPerezGolf.com T-Shirts to random winners each week.

Stay classy. - Double P

Golf Performance Tip from Jeff @ Back9Fitness.com

Double P's physical therapist and trainer Jeff Banaszak (Back9Fitness.com) has written in with this week's golf performance tip. Check it out and implement it into your regimen!

AREA TARGETED: Lower Leg/Calf

ROLE IN THE SWING: The calf muscle is a powerful muscle in the posterior leg that allows us to rise up onto our toes. During the golf swing, many tour pro’s actually elevate or lift slightly off the ground as they make contact with the ball at impact. Due to these mechanics this muscle tends to be one of the tightest we see in golf. It doesn’t help that many tour pro’s have to walk over 5 miles per day.

MUSCLES TARGETED: Gastrocnemius (i.e. calf)

POSITION: Seated with one leg positioned straight in front of the body.

EXERCISE: Maintain the above position. Place a strap, belt or rope over the ball of the foot. Ideally, wrap the rope around the foot. Tighten the muscle in the front of the leg called the anterior tibialis (i.e. shin muscle) to actively stretch the calf.

EQUIPMENT: A rope, strap or belt can be used to assist with the stretch. Ideal length for the rope should be between 8 1/2' and 9' long.

PRESCRIPTION: Length in this muscle is very important for golf and should be targeted daily. Ideally hold the end position for a 2-second bout. Repeat this exercise 10 - 15 times.

Double P fires opening round 67 in Reno...

RENO, NV - Double P opened Thursday's round with a birdie and never looked back. His 3 on the par-4 set the tone for the day.

Perez netted another birdie on #3 and picked up three more on the back nine, at #11, #13 and #14. He enters Friday t-7th and four strokes off the lead. Will MacKenzie made a late charge on Thursday with a -9 round for a 63 on the day.

Today's -5 was PP's first bogey-free round since shooting 60 in the opening round of this year's Bob Hope Classic back in January.

Friday's tee time is slated for 12:55pm PT. He tees off on hole #10. Click here to follow Friday's live scoring.

Golf Performance Tip from Jeff @ Back9Fitness.com

Double P's physical therapist and trainer Jeff Banaszak (Back9Fitness.com) has written in with this week's golf performance tip. Check it out and implement it into your regimen!

AREA TARGETED: Anterior Hip

ROLE IN THE SWING: The anterior hip of many muscles, ligaments and other soft tissues that support the golfers address posture as they forward bend or hinge at the hips. This position causes these structures to shorten or tighten.

Now add the fact that a professional golfer spends over 8 hours per day in this position while practicing and playing, it is easy to see why this area gets chronically short or tight! Actually on TOUR it is epidemic!!!

MUSCLES TARGETED: Deep hip including the psoas and iliacus muscles and the anterior thigh or quadriceps group.

POSITION: 1/2 Kneeling, line up the ear, shoulder over the down knee.

EXERCISE: Maintain the above position. Complete a posterior tilt by tightening the stomach muscles (i.e. abdominals) and the buttock (i.e. gluteals) together. This will move the individual's belt buckle upward.

EQUIPMENT: None needed. Some individuals may want to place a pad under the down knee or use a golf club to maintain balance.

PRESCRIPTION: For golfers this exercise needs to be done daily. Make the exercise active by moving into the position described and holding for a short 2 second bout. Repeat this exercise 10 to 15 times.

Jeff from Back9Fitness.com Chimes In...

Jeff Banaszak of Back9Fitness.com wrote in this week, in his first official installment for PatPerezGolf.com.

"One of the great aspects of my job as a physical therapist traveling on the TOUR, is finding the gadgets to make my job easier. One such item is called the Vibracussor. I have been personally using this item for over a year now with tremendous results.

The Vibracussor is an instrument about the size of a hand-held drill. Besides preventing wear-n-tear on my hands this device has increased the efficiency of the hands-on services I provide to players.

Once placed on the body, this device provides mechanical compression at different frequencies that can be applied to various restrictions throughout the body.

For golf, this device is a great asset that allows the therapist to specifically target tight tissues that may be dictating movement within the individuals golf swing. Besides targeting tight tissues, the benefits of mechanical compressive therapy include stimulation of body proprioceptors.

Prioprioceptors are specialized cells found within joints and muscles that when activated help protect and improve function. By stimulating the proprioceptors, the therapist can activate a particular muscle needed to control posture, balance and strength.

I currently use this device with TOUR Pros including Pat Perez, Tommy Armour III and John Cook."

For more information on the Vibracussor, check out Back9Fitness.com.

Gearing Up For PGA Championship...

Hey Everyone. PP checking in here. Back in Scottsdale. Spent a few weeks in San Diego trying to beat the heat. Took in a few ballgames, rock shows and just kicked it with my bros, working the grill and hanging out.

I've been back home a few days now and am back in the groove at API (Athlete's Performance) in an attempt to gear up for the PGA Championship in a few weeks. I've been wrestling with when I'd return and I've come to the conclusion, that tourney is too big to miss. Even if I'm not 100%, I have to give it a go.

The PGA is a huge event and I can't pass up that opportunity. I had a great run at the PGA last year (finished t-6th) and hopefully I can get out there this year and get it done - in Medinah, Illinois.

Aside from that, we're pushing forward with my charity tourney. I've been talking with Hootie's management about locking them down for the event. Right now, it looks like we'll have them at 4th&B in San Diego on Sunday January 28th - a few hours after the Buick wraps up. My tourney will be Monday the 29th and we're trying to get the fellas locked down again for Monday night - maybe a different set list, an acoustic portion, etc.

Both shows are going to have a limited amount of ticket sold - which is solid since the guys usually play for a few thousand each show.

More on the charity tourney stuff as it develops. My guys are going to build out a section of the website where people can sign up for foursomes. That's coming soon. Stay tuned.

On that note, out the door and back to the gym. I'll check back in soon.

Oh yeah, tomorrow we'll post a pic of my dog Cosmo. I've gotten some requests on the MySpace page, so we'll get that tru player up on here a.s.a.p.
